The list of notable residents of Atwater includes the father of Sweet Potatoes, John B. Avila, and also Carrie Henn, the actress who played 'Newt' in Aliens. Also of note, the black metal band, Willow Wisp was formed here. Maybe they'll do a mash-up for the town anniversary. Newt Wisp Potatoes, anyone?

This small city of a little over 28,000 people works to make itself a great place to live. There are community projects, classes and activities. Oh and there are plenty of bars, restaurants and other assorted goodies.

Moving to Atwater

Moving here is really a blast -- at least...once you find a place. The standard California issues apply here as landlords want everything on your application. Be ready with plenty of cash when you find a place because the security deposit will be a chunk. If you have pets, expect to pay a separate security deposit for them along with an additional monthly fee. The most helpful documents you can have in your application packet are references from former landlords (be sure to get recommendations for any pets you might have), proof of income and money.

Neighborhoods

Atwater has 9 different neighborhoods, but they are laid out in a rather interesting pattern. It's more like the older area is less expensive, and as the neighborhoods grew and developed, so did the size and expense of the homes.

Cressey:This area has many vacant rental properties, a fact that has driven the price for rentals down (good for us renters -- sucks for your landlord). The neighborhood population itself is rather small, which makes the area feel even more rural than it is. But with just under 400 people, it' has plenty of recreational opportunities.

White Crane:This is a small area that plays host to a neighborhood with low rental rates. Commuting times are great as well, with most of the local residents having a half hour commute or less each way.

Fergus:Housing prices are lower if you are buying, the rents are a bit higher. There are still plenty of vacancies and this area stresses great parks, and other amenities

Fluhr:Rentals are less expensive and are older, so your wallet will thank you. Most of the properties here were built in the late 1970s.

City Center and Winton Way:These two neighborhoods are slowly merging into a single entity. The rental prices are low but so is the cost to buy a home.

Bellevue:This is a beautiful community.

Buhach and Castle Gardens:Variety of home styles and businesses. These two neighborhoods are very similar.
