This hilly little burg's charmingly rustic, picture postcard-worthiness traces its inland freshwater commerce source to its settlement roots in 1690. Situated on an idyllic stretch of the pristine Delaware River, Port Jervis took on its current name in 1853 when it was officially incorporated as a village (later to be upgraded to a city). It became well established, economically viable and well known in southeastern New York state as a result of the creation of the Delaware and Hudson Rivers Canal. Port Jervis is commonly referenced as a NYC commuter suburb, although its hefty 78-mile distance from Manhattan is on the edge of daily commute viability.
