Fond Du Lac is in no way the “big” city that Milwaukee (its southern neighbor) is, but it doesn’t need that reputation to appeal to people of all ages. College students come here to attend one of the three colleges (Marina University, University of Wisconsin-FDL campus and Moraine Park Tech) and young professionals live here for the easy commute time, job opportunities and inexpensive apartment living.

1 BRs are abundant in FDL, making it easy and affordable to rent on your own. They range between $500and $800 (more expensive for a newer apartment).
If 2 BRs are more your speed, FDL has plenty of those to offer. Expect to pay between $570and $830 for a 2 BR. A word of advice: the further north, even into North FDL, the lower the rents. In North FDL you can grab a 2 BR/1100 sq. ft. apartment for $729 a month. If you have some wiggle room with your budget, opt for life on the golf course, as the more expensive communities are located on the putting green. Amenities aren’t huge in Fond du Lac but most apartments come with either free parking or assigned spots for a small fee ($30).
Making the move with a pet? Fond du Lac has you covered. Most pets are allowed with a deposit—you may want to leave behind the pet monkey or the pet snake—and often a pet interview or monthly pet rent (@ $25).
