Locals prefer to call this place Cat City!
Cathedral City is located in Riverside County, California, sandwiched between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. You might be familiar with the Coachella Music Festival, which takes place here in the Coachella Valley every year. It's one of the two biggest cities in the Valley. The name comes from "Cathedral Canyon," which is south of the town. It has a number of golf resorts that keep the city thriving with booming tourism. The population now hovers around 51,200 and continues to grow rapidly.
Moving to "Cat City"
If you're planning on looking for an apartment complex in Cat City, you're in luck. There is a good amount of rental apts here, which makes it easy for renters to find places to live in. Because of the booming tourist economy and the growing population, there are new developments cropping up all the time. In order to rent an apartment in Cathedral City, you'll want to make sure to check out all the different options. Maybe you've lived in townhouses before and know you dig them, or maybe you are only after stand-alone houses where you can have your own lawn or garden. Or maybe you like the modern convenience of high-rises or big apartment buildings. Whatever you decide, it's important to make sure you have checked out all your options before settling on one particular place. The time of year doesn't make much of a difference here, although if you want to avoid the tourist traffic and the sweltering heat, you might do well to avoid summertime searching.
What You'll Need
Finding an apartment in Cathedral City won't be too hard on your schedule. There's also a good number of vacancies here so you should be able to slide in and find a spot without too many issues. That doesn't mean you won't have to go through the standard application process, however. Landlords are going to want to see all your basic paperwork in order to approve you. Bring copies of your credit report, bank statements, letters of reference, letters of employment, pay stubs and anything else that will help prove your identity and improve your chances of scoring that apartment. You'll also want to bring your checkbook in case you stumble upon your dream apartment and want to write a deposit check that day! Nothing impresses more than putting the money where your mouth is when it comes to renting!
Neighborhoods
Cathedral City takes up a little chunk of the southern California desert and is home to a number of different neighborhoods.
Date Palm Drive/Vista Chino: Date Palm Drive is the northern part of Cathedral City. It has a suburban feel and is a bit more luxurious than some of the other neighborhoods.
City Center: This area has a little more action going on than some of the outer neighborhoods. It's the area furthest south and extends across the E. Palm Canyon Drive. Plaza Center is nearby for great shopping and it's just off the Date Palm Country Club.
Dinah Shore Drive: This area is comprised of a number of small subdivisions. It's definitely the ritziest area of town and is a mix of single-unit homes and townhomes.
Calle Mora/Cathedral Canyon Drive: This neighborhood is sandwiched up against Cathedral Canyon Country Club, one of the big tourism draws for the city. There's also the Cinemark 10 Movie Theater and the Cathedral City Marketplace. This area is mainly made up of single-unit homes with quite a few mobile homes due to the RV park located here. Why not get yourself a mobile home and live life on four wheels?
Life in Cathedral City
If you're planning on scoring a home for rent here in Cathedral City, you're in for a treat. The feel of the city varies from season to season, depending on the influx of tourists. It's desert territory, so the days are hot, hot, hot and the nights are cold, cold, cold. You'll probably want an adjustable thermostat to be able to keep up with the daily temperature changes.
The area has an interesting history and was known as a safe haven during the Prohibition, with lots of bars and clubs that stayed open despite the laws against them. The city has a number of beautiful golf courses, such as the Cimarron Golf Resort, Desert Princess Country Club and Date Palm Country Club -- one of the main reasons so many visitors flock here all year-round. There are also quite a few public parks that the city is incredibly proud of, and it likes to keep them pretty and well-maintained; stop by Panorama Park, Century Park or Second Street Park on your days off. If you're not familiar with Coachella yet, you'll learn about it when you get here. For two weekends in April, a good part of the Valley is taken over by musicians and music lovers who pack in front of stages and rock out to popular bands all day and all night.
