Columbus’s Civil War history is preserved throughout town in the many monuments and historical sites dedicated to the city’s reputation as a hospital depot. Antebellum Columbus developed as a manufacturing and military town, as the city has been home to the Columbus Air Force Base since World War II.
Outdoor recreation is king in Columbus. The area offers many recreational activities, including hiking, hunting, swimming, and fishing. Additionally, Columbus residents enjoy a good mix of chain retail stores on the fringes of the city, as well as locally owned and operated restaurants and shops.
Great news! Because of its mixed population of students, military, and established families, Columbus has a great rental market, offering every type of apartment available at affordable prices.
Columbus Air Force Base is located about 12 miles north of the city center. The housing developments here offer studio apartments and one to three bedrooms in complexes with great amenities, such as a gym, swimming pool and clubhouse. Additionally, many of these complexes offer short term lease options and even rent on a month-to-month basis.
To the east of the city center, near the city of New Hope and the Mississippi-Alabama state line, you’ll also find a neighborhood. Though there aren’t tons of apartment complexes in this region, you can occasionally find rental homes or duplexes for rent.
South of the city center, around Mississippi University for Women there are a number of cheap apartments available. Similarly, there are reasonably priced apartments just north of the city center around the Leigh Mall Shopping Center.
Pet friendly apartments for rent in Columbus are hit or miss. While some landlords and management companies may allow animals of all shapes and sizes, cat and dog friendly rentals may require additional security deposits, or have limitations on the size or number of your pets. If you’re relocating with a four-legged friend, allow yourself plenty of time to secure a rental.
