Worthington certainly qualifies as a small town; but many residents aren't hampered by small-town ambitions. They simply enjoy living in a tight-knit community. Worthington represents a thriving cultural and commercial center in what is otherwise one of the quietest regions of Minnesota. The city first began as a railroad stop in the late 1800s but quickly expanded into a thriving community in its own right. Today, the area's main focus is on the agriculture industry, although recreation also remains of high importance among those living in Worthington rentals homes.
Worthington Neighborhoods
Much of the activity in Worthington is based south of Interstate 90. From the peaceful nature of Okabena Lake to the hustle and bustle of downtown Worthington, there is enough variety in the city's many neighborhoods to allow any prospective resident to find his or her dream homes while conducting a local apartment search.
North Worthington: The northern region of Worthington is mostly dedicated to the Worthington Municipal Airport, one of Nobles County's main transportation hubs. There are also, however, several residential areas north of Interstate 90. Many of these are located along the lovely Okabena Creek.
Oxford Street: Oxford Street is something of a main drag in Worthington. The road connects up to Interstate 90, making it easy for both locals and visitors to get where they need to go. This neighborhood serves as one of Worthington's main commercial areas, although its significant residential offerings make also make it a great place to find a duplex for rent.
Downtown Worthington: When you step into Worthington's quaint downtown district, you'll feel as if you've entered a time capsule. But in spite of its old school feel, downtown Worthington really is a happening place. Here, you'll find the Nobles County Library, as well as several of Worthington's best eateries, including El Azteca and the Queen Sheba Restaurant.
Okabena Lake: The large Okabena Lake takes up a good portion of Worthington's southwest region. Immediately to the south and west of this lake, however, is a small residential area. This is a great place to find 1 bedroom apartments for rent if you're in need of peaceful surroundings.
Read Avenue: Worthington's southeast corner is separated from the rest of the city by Highway 59. Although this is a main route for drivers entering and exiting southern Worthington, many also arrive via Read Avenue. The quiet corner of Worthington connected to Read Avenue is also home to the South East Side Park and Orchard Knoll Park.
Worthington Is Worth It
Given its location near the state border, Worthington might not seem like the ideal Minnesota hometown, but there is much more to this city than its proximity to Iowa. Perhaps the biggest reason prospective residents choose to live in Worthington is the friendly atmosphere. The historic feel of the city's downtown area is actually indicative of its old school feel, in which residents are always happy to greet one another while also making newcomers feel welcome.
Getting Around In Worthington
One of the great things about living and working in Worthington is that it's always easy to get where you need to go. If you arrive by plane, you'll fly into the Worthington Municipal Airport. It's more common, however, for visitors and residents to drive to Worthington, which is most easily reached via Interstate 90. If you are either unable to drive or simply prefer to travel via public transit, you're in luck; Worthington is part of the Nobles County Heartland Express system. This bus line will not only allow you to travel throughout the city of Worthington, it'll also provide you with easy access to several other cities within Nobles County. If you are unable to sync your schedule up with that of the Nobles County Heartland Express, you can also take advantage of the local low-cost taxi service provided by the Prairieland Transit System.
