There are many small lakes, ponds, and streams scattered throughout the community as well. Thirty-eight of them have names, and many more do not. You won't have to go far to find water. Bird watchers and walkers, joggers, and bikers can rejoice at the many open places near these bodies of water.
This region has long appealed to people who love warm weather. Early Native American tribes, Spanish settlers, and the Seminole Native American tribe lived here before Florida became a state back in 1845. The greater Lakeland area, including Fussels Corner was settled in the late 1800s, and buildings from this era are still standing and have a place on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Polk Theater, and the Terrace Hotel. There are also extensive buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the area, arguably the largest single collection of his buildings in the world.
Looking for plenty of green space? The nearby Lake Mirror area includes three such bucolic destinations, including Hollis Gardens, Barnett Children's Park, and Allen Kryger Park.

Sports lovers rejoice: the Detroit Tigers have trained in the Lakeland area since 1934 and show no signs of stopping now. Minor league team the Lakeland Flying Tigers play and practice at the same stadium, Joker Marchant.
And after a game? Dining out? The Red Door Wine Market and Molly McHugh's Irish Pub offer fine food and libations in the area.
